Simply Maya – Stylized Cartoon Female – Red Girl | 1.60 GB

We start off by creating a project folder and setting up image planes before we move on to sculpting out the basic head shape with NURBS component CV’s and inserting isoparms in areas that require extra resolution. We cut out holes for the eyeballs and mouth area, and convert to polygons for detail modeling and fine shaping of nostrils, chin and cheeks. We switch between a low resolution polygon and a high resolution subdivision mesh and use the sculpt geometry tool to smooth and round out areas of the model to get a nice organic shape.

When the head is complete we continue on the body, you’ll learn how to model clothes in Maya and make the really cool looking boots on our character. We also model hands, before we go back to doing some more work on the face adding the gums and teeth. You’ll learn some clever techniques for how you can use NURBS to model hair on a cartoon character as well as how to cut out geometry in a way that simplifies the UV process and how the polygon count can be reduced when you’re working on things like clothes and hair.

When the modeling process is complete we lay out the UV’s and create the cartoon textures for the character in Photoshop. During the texturing part you’ll learn how to work with layers when you’re painting to be able to fix mistakes easily and get better control over your color maps. We paint the clothes and skin and add bump maps to get some more details like skin pores and cloth structure on our fabrics.

Finally we create a specular map to pinpoint exactly where on a character we want the specular highlights to appear and we explain the underlying principles of how bump and specular maps work on a grey scale and how you can use noise filters to get good variation within these maps. When we have all the different maps imported into Maya and assigned to the model we use some different procedural textures to create great looking cartoon eyes and work with the hair tube shader to get realistic hair.
