In 3d Character Art for Video Games Volume 4, UV layout, I go over dealing with UVs in detail including when you might consider using multiple textures, mirroring and offsetting UVs, optimization, and layout concerns to avoid texture baking problems. Also included with this video is a scene file from my demonstration of stacking UVs to create a tileable effect. I’m using Maya to demonstrate, but the ideas can be applied to whichever 3d application you’re most comfortable with. Over an hour’s worth of instruction
