With the introduction of Unity’s 2D toolset they also debuted a new ‘Sprite’ texture type. This series is intended to outline the various ways sprites can be imported and used in your game.

Unity’s Sprite Packer
Sprite animations
Mecanim’s state machine for animation transitions
Top down character controller
Once completed, you will have a basic understanding of the new Sprite Texture type for use in your own game.
