Skillshare – Pushing The Boundaries With Unconventional Lenses In Your Photography

I love being as creative as possible in-camera. Getting the absolute best photos in camera before I even get to the editing side. For this reason, I explored vintage and Lensbaby lenses from early on and have several that I absolutely love. I want to share that love with you and get you excited about trying out some lenses that are beyond just the standard lenses. I am shooting on my full-frame camera – Canon 5D Mark III – in this series. Most of these lenses work fine with full-frame and crop-frame cameras.

I love experimenting with lenses. After you have been doing photography for a few years – at some point – you are likely to get into a creative rut or feel stuck… and getting some of the lenses that are a bit more unconventional is the perfect way to get excited again with your photography. Antique film lenses are especially nice because of the cost – they are usually really cheap – since most people selling them think they have no value.

In this video series I am going to show you some of my favorite unconventional lenses to use, and some of the photos you might expect to get with them. I hope you enjoy seeing some new choices that might be open to you for your photography and give some of these lenses a try!

*Wondering what my favorite lenses are after years of playing in all the lenses? The Velvet 56 – because of its versatility and the velvety feel it gives your photos. The Helios 44-2 – because of its wonderful swirly background features, and the Meyer Optik lens – because it is an inexpensive vintage lens that gives a wonderful velvety feel to the photo like the Lensbaby Velvets

(All of these lenses I’m showing you are manual lenses. That means you are manually focusing the lens and usually manually selecting your aperture on the lens itself, not in the camera. There is a slight learning curve to manual lenses if you aren’t used to shooting manual… Just go slow and practice. They get easier after you work with them for a bit and get it figured out – that is also part of the fun of these lenses. They really push your creativity and get you out of your auto modes.)

For the vintage lenses – some of my favorite places to look for them are:

eBay – look for a lens that is in good condition, no mold inside or on the glass, and a seller that has good feedback. That being said – it is still possible to get a dud. Having a seller who didn’t know what they were selling. Read the listing closely and ask them questions if you are in doubt. Vintage lenses will require an adaptor to fit your new camera. I get the lens adaptors on Amazon. I just google the lens mount to whatever my camera mount is. I’ll show you what mine look like in the video.

KEH – my online source for really great used camera gear

For the Lensbaby lenses – I usually get those directly from Lensbaby – but they can also be found at other camera retailers online. Older Lensbaby lenses I look for on KEH and eBay.
